Lights Camera Africa!!! Film Festival will be premiering An Opera of the World, a film by Manthia Diawara, for the first time in Africa at the 7th edition of the Film Festival.
According to the Founder, Ugoma Adegoke,
An Opera of the World is 70 minutes of poetic, relevant, heart-wrenching and pride filling story telling from one of the continent’s most important film griots. It is a must-watch piece of cinema and it is a great honor to be screening this in Africa for the first time and following the film’s powerful world premiere in June at documenta14 in Kassal, Germany.”, she said.
Manthia Diawaraʼs film is based on the African opera ʻBintou Were, a Sahel Operaʼ, which narrates an eternal migration drama. The “Bintou Were” opera, filmed on location in Bamako, in 2007, serves as a mirror for Diawara to build an aesthetic and reflexive story, through song and dance, about the current and yet timeless drama of migration between North and South, and refugee crises.
The film ponders on the realities of cultural encounters through the concepts of métissage and hybridity. The success and limits of fusing African and European perspectives are tested by interlacing performances from the “Bintou Were” opera, past and present archival footages of migrations, classic European arias and interviews with European and African intellectuals, artists and social activists including Alexander Kluge, Fatou Diome, Nicole Lapierre and Richard
The Film Festival will be held at Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos from September 29th, 2017 to October 1st, 2017.
